What you'll learn

About the course

What you will work through

Once you can draw a simple ornamental flower, the next problem arrives quickly. You want flowers with more petals, curled edges, a stem that leads somewhere, and small details like collars and knots, and every attempt turns crowded. The petals fight each other, the flower looks flat, and the stem seems to belong to a different drawing. Adding more lines rarely helps.

In this pre-recorded workshop I take the method from Ornamental Florals: Basic and extend it. You will learn to build a fuller flower on a guide shape and an axis, so that every petal, frill and ring has a place before it is drawn. Watch at your own pace, and pause as often as you need.

We begin with the guides. Every flower here starts from a circle and a cross, a tilted ellipse, nested circles, a funnel, a few curved lines or a pentagon. The guide decides the view, the tilt and the direction of the stem. Choosing it first matters more than it sounds: a fuller flower has many parts, and without a guide every part is a fresh guess.

Then we draw the flowers one at a time, each in clear stages from guide to clean outline. The iris, seen from the front, with two upright petals, two falling at the sides and one large petal hanging down. The acanthus flower, whose petals curl around the centre in one direction. The upright tulip bud with its collar and knot, the trumpet flower and the frilled bell, and a turned flower with a small bud on the same stem. Then the funnel flower, which opens from a narrow ringed stem, and the grand bloom, the largest flower in the workshop, with a ring of long petals, a beaded cup and a bud at its centre.

Each flower teaches one idea that carries over to the next: one direction of turn, rings drawn across the stem first, notches of an even size, narrowing sides before the rim, and a stem that leads into the flower. So when a flower of your own goes wrong, you will know which idea to check.

We also draw a stem knot, which shows how a ring wraps around a curved stem, and a leaf built inside a pentagon, so your flowers have details and foliage to go with them. Finally we shade with fine hatching: lines drawn from the centre outward, evenly spaced, with the petal edges left light. Shading comes last, and lightly at first, because you can always add more lines but you cannot take them away.

By the end you will have ten finished drawings, seen from the front, turned, upright and from the side, and you will know which guide to start from, how to give a flower a stem, a collar or a knot, and how to shade it with fine hatching. More than that, you will stop crowding your flowers and start building them. A fuller flower is not a more crowded flower. A guide drawn first, petals that all turn one way and a clean outline will always do more than extra lines, and these flowers are the foundation for placing blooms with leaves and scrolls in a full design.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Should I buy this course once, or subscribe?+

Both work. A one-time purchase gives you lifetime access to this course, yours to revisit forever. An OB Art Circle membership instead opens this course and every other included course to you, for as long as your subscription stays active.

What materials do I need?+

Each lesson lists what to use. For most ornamental work a sketchbook, pencil, eraser and a fineliner pen are enough to begin.

Is this suitable for my level?+

This course is pitched at an intermediate level, but every step is demonstrated slowly so motivated beginners can follow along.

How do I pay?+

Outside India you pay in US dollars through PayPal, by card or with a PayPal account. In India you pay in rupees through Razorpay, by UPI, card or net banking. The currency is picked for you, and the INR and USD switch in the site header or menu changes it.
