Layering Acanthus

A single acanthus leaf can be drawn well and still sit flat. The moment you put two or more together a new question appears: which one is in front? If the answer is not obvious at a glance, the whole arrangement flattens, however carefully each leaf was drawn on its own.

In this workshop we treat depth as something you build rather than something that happens. Through marked-up carvings, photographs and historical engravings, you will learn the five things that create the illusion of layers, the four ways two forms can overlap, and how to tell a clean overlap from a confusing one.

What is inside this workshop

We begin with what actually creates the illusion of layers: background against foreground, overlapping forms, scale, line weight, and positive and negative space. Each is shown on its own so you can see exactly what it contributes, and why none of them work alone.

Next we cover the four ways to overlap two forms: same direction edge to edge, reverse direction, intersecting, and multiple intersection. Each comes with a bare spine sketch showing the movement underneath, so you can see the gesture before any leaves are added.

We then read overlap in finished work: three carved and painted pieces marked up layer by layer, including one deliberately confusing example, because seeing an overlap fail teaches as much as seeing one succeed.

From there we look at real ornament, a symmetrical stone panel, a rosette and a set of engraved borders, and find the same four overlap types at work in all of them.

We finish by returning to movement, showing how depth appears on its own once every form overlaps the last along one shared direction of growth.

By the end of the workshop

You will be able to look at any acanthus arrangement and name, for every form in it, whether it sits in the background, the middle or the foreground. You will know the four overlap types by sight, when each one is worth using, and how scale and line weight work together to hold an arrangement in place.

More importantly, you will stop treating depth as a finishing touch. It is decided at the moment two forms meet, and once you can name what happens there, you can build it into everything you draw.
