Connectors in Ornamental Art

Ornament is rarely one continuous line. A scroll ends and another begins, two stems cross, a branch changes direction. Something has to happen at those points, and most artists leave them to chance, which is why a design can look assembled rather than grown.

In this workshop we treat the join as something you design. We start by placing the connector in the anatomy of a scroll and naming the four jobs it does: joining two stems, hiding the seam, marking a change of direction, and carrying the eye across the join.

Before drawing anything we look at connectors in finished historic work, an engraved panel, a filled border and a painted grotesque, with the joins circled and enlarged. Seeing how small and how frequent they are changes how you look at your own drawings.

Then we build five connectors step by step, each suited to a different situation. The banded knot for straight runs and borders. The woven knot, where lobes interlace above and below a central stem. The floral knot, for the point where two stems genuinely cross. The leaf knot, where the tie is itself a small acanthus leaf. And the rosette tie, for a stem that changes thickness or direction.

Along the way we look closely at what makes an interlace read correctly, because every connector after the first depends on it: alternation, clean interruption, and where the shadow goes. We finish by comparing all five side by side, so you can choose a connector by what the join is doing rather than by how much ornament you feel like adding.

By the end you will be able to look at any join in your own work and say which of the five it needs, and why, and place the darks so a knot appears to hold something rather than sit on top of it. Joins stop being problems to disguise. A connector is the moment a design admits it is made of parts, and drawn well it is what makes those parts read as one thing.
