Refining Acanthus: Edges, Cuts & Character

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to refine acanthus leaves through a deeper understanding of edges, cuts, and ornamental character. We’ll explore how convex and concave edges influence the appearance of form, how edge transitions create elegance and movement, and how different types of cuts can add rhythm, depth, and visual interest to a design.

The session covers understanding leaf anatomy, lobe development, edge refinement, cut variations, overlap treatment, and the relationship between line quality and form. You’ll learn how subtle changes in shape and line can dramatically affect the personality of a leaf, making it feel more graceful, bold, delicate, or dramatic. We will also discuss common refinement mistakes that make ornamental leaves appear mechanical or static, along with practical methods for creating more natural and expressive forms.

Through demonstrations and guided examples, you’ll gain insight into the refinement process used by ornamental artists to create leaves that feel cohesive, balanced, and visually engaging.
