In this workshop, you’ll learn how to construct complex ornamental compositions using connecting scrolls, acanthus variations, and structured ornamental flow within a square format. Through a live demonstration approach, the session focuses on understanding how ornamental forms grow naturally from movement and rhythm rather than simply copying a finished design.
Beginning with a 9cm square framework, you’ll explore how to use margins, circular grids, and guiding structures to create smoother and more controlled scroll movements. The workshop covers different scroll variations including C-scrolls, inverted C-scrolls, and S-scrolls while maintaining harmony, balance, and directional flow throughout the composition.
You’ll also learn how acanthus leaves and secondary forms should follow the movement of the scroll naturally, helping the composition feel more organic and visually elegant. Different detailing techniques, lobe variations, and overlap treatments will be explored to help avoid visual clutter and improve overall balance within the design.

What’s Inside This Workshop
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to construct ornamental compositions from the ground up using grids, guiding structures, and controlled scroll movement. The session covers creating and combining different scroll forms, understanding overlap techniques, placing focal points, managing negative space, and maintaining balance across a composition.
You’ll also explore floral construction, acanthus detailing, secondary veins, and ornamental flow while learning how to simplify larger curves into smaller controlled strokes for better accuracy and smoother line quality. The workshop additionally includes discussions on line control, pencil pressure during construction, overlap planning before inking, and practical inking techniques using different fineliner sizes.
By the end of the workshop
You’ll have a stronger understanding of how to build complex ornamental compositions with better structure, movement, and flow. You’ll be able to create more refined scroll arrangements, manage spacing more confidently, and develop ornamental designs that feel balanced, dynamic, and visually cohesive.
